| Shrine at Stockwell Station Following the tragic and brutal death of Jean Charles at the hands of police on a London Underground train, local residents of Stockwell and members of the family campaign created a shrine outside Stockwell tube station. On 7 January 2010, a permanent memorial will replace the shrine that has stood for almost five years. The original wooden shrine was about 2 metres squared and was a place that received hundreds of cards and messages of sympathy and support for the family from people worldwide shocked and sickened by both Jean's sudden unnecessary death and the response of the authorities. The shrine was maintained and cared for by a small group of volunteers who met regularly. The family of Jean Charles also regularly visit the shrine and were both touched and strengthened by the continuing support they received in their campaign for justice. These words are from one of the people who had maintained the original shrine: "Personally, when I heard of Jean's death, immediately contacted my son to make sure that it was not him. Although I believed at the time the version that the police had killed a suspected bomber, I also had a strong sense that this could have been a wild card response to the failed bombings of the day before. However, as soon as news came out that it was indeed a mistaken identity and that there had been a cover up of some
sorts, I got involved. We are committed to keeping the space alive until such time as a permanent memorial has been erected in his honour, albeit if justice is never achieved.
